North Shore 2010
In 2010, the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games are coming to Vancouver. And while Vancouver and Whistler are the official co-hosts, West Vancouver is a proud Venue City and the home to Cypress Mountain. Cypress is the official freestyle skiing and snowboard venue for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games.

2010 Winter Games VenueFreestyle skiing events include aerials, moguls and ski cross, while snowboard events include half-pipe, parallel giant slalom and snowboard cross. Some of the biggest potential stars of the Games - such as Canadian moguls skier Jennifer Heil and American snowboarder Shaun White are expected to be going for gold on the slopes of Cypress.
This past February marked the one-year countdown for the Vancouver 2010 Games. And the buzz on the mountain is continuing to grow, says Cypress Media Relations/Ski & Snowboard Director Kent Rideout. "Things are pretty much ready to go and you can really feel the anticipation."
Visitors to the North Shore can head up to Cypress any time over the next year to have a look at the venues where history will be made in February of 2010. Rideout says many have already made the trip up to the ski resort to see what they can expect. "If you do come up, whether it's in the summer or the winter, you can actually see the venues. For example, the freestyle venue comes right down to the edge of the parking lot so you can literally drive up."
Cypress also boasts a 48,000-square-foot alpine lodge that was officially opened Dec. 14, 2008. With everything in place, Cypress is ready for the Games, says Rideout. "It gets you excited because you can kind of visualize what's going to take place in 2010."

Cypress isn't the only place on the North Shore with Olympic fever. North Vancouver will also be very involved participating as a "Route Community" during the 2010 Olympic Torch Relay, holding themed events, hosting visitors and guests, and providing key transportation hubs for the Games. And there are many more exciting things now being organized across the North Shore.
Plans are now underway for two North Shore Celebration Sites - one at the West Vancouver Community Centre and one at the Lynn Valley Centre. These sites are where people will be able to gather and watch Olympic and Paralympic events on large screens and share in the camaraderie and excitement of the Games.
Many individuals and community groups, including the North Shore Spirit of B.C committee, have been active on projects that will both enhance the Games and provide lasting legacies. The new Spirit Trail, which will eventually span the North Shore from Deep Cove to Horseshoe Bay, is a good example of an enduring legacy.
